ceramic and scented oil
Based on the mechanisms of biochemical communication between trees, this work takes advantage of diffusion and gradient through dispersed scented oil at the center of this ceramic vessel. This work was placed in situ of Los Padres forest, which borders Los Angeles. I have been using this forest as a source of inspiration for a film project. The oil itself is pure Geosmin, the smell of a “healthy garden”, which is excreted by a class of bacteria (Actinomycetes) upon their death. The more that they are in competition with each other, the more Geosmin is released from the bodies of these decomposing bacteria
